TikTok Orders U.S. Staff Back to the Office Five Days a Week Starting in September
TikTok will require most of its U.S. employees to work from the office five days a week starting next month, three staffers told Business Insider.
The mandate ends flexibility for hybrid workers who currently have at least one remote day. Some teams are already on a five-day schedule: staff on TikTok Shop, the company’s ecommerce division, have worked in-office every day for more than a year. TikTok began signaling the broader shift in December, when it told employees across product, marketing, and ad sales to prepare for a full office return in 2026.
TikTok operates offices in several U.S. cities, including New York, Austin, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and employs thousands of workers in the country.
The company runs its U.S. operations partly through a joint venture involving ByteDance and a group of investors that includes Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX. That structure took shape in December, when TikTok signed an agreement creating a new entity called TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, majority-owned by American investors and governed by a seven-member, majority-American board.
TikTok’s move puts it alongside Instagram and Amazon, which already require many staffers in five days a week. YouTube and Patreon have kept hybrid schedules at three days. Spotify has stayed flexible, and Dropbox co-CEO Ashraf Alkarmi told Business Insider he intends to keep his company “virtual-first” because “flexibility and autonomy are the ultimate currency in modern work.”
