Snapchatters Spending $50+ Monthly on Short Dramas Convert to Downloads at Higher Rate Than Rivals, Study Finds

Snapchatters who watch Short Dramas are more likely to download the format’s apps, pay for episodes, and return for repeat viewing than users of competing platforms, according to a study commissioned by Snap Inc. and conducted by Ipsos.

The research surveyed 3,000 consumers across the U.S., the UK, and Saudi Arabia, split between 1,719 daily Snapchatters and 1,281 non-Snapchatters, all either current Short Drama watchers or interested in the format. A Short Drama is a vertical, high-tempo video series that typically runs one to 15 minutes per episode and stretches to 50 or 100 installments.

Adoption Outpaces the Broader Market

Among daily social media users overall, 42% report watching Short Dramas daily, rising to 58% in Saudi Arabia. The study found no sign of fatigue: 71% of daily social media users adopted the format within the past year, and 61% of viewers who have watched for a year or more say they are consuming more content now than a year ago. Future intent is also high, with 83% of daily social media users expressing intent to keep watching, and 87% in Saudi Arabia.

Within that market, the study reports Snapchatters move faster and spend more than non-Snapchatters at nearly every stage. Sixty-four percent of daily Snapchatters are familiar with at least one Short Drama platform, compared with 42% of non-Snapchatters, a gap Snap describes as 1.4x higher. Fifty-one percent of daily Snapchatters who watch Short Dramas do so daily, versus 30% of non-Snapchatters, and Saudi Snapchatters watch regularly at a 62% clip. Session length follows the same pattern: Snapchatters are 1.3x more likely to watch for more than 30 minutes straight, a behavior peaking in the U.S. (38%) and Saudi Arabia (39%).

From Discovery to Download

The study frames peer recommendation as central to discovery, with 29% of daily social media users interested in Short Dramas saying they find shows through friends and family and 20% through influencers they follow. On Snapchat specifically, viewing translates into social activity after the fact: 74% say they talk about a show in person, 74% share the clip, 69% post a reaction or comment on their Story, and 64% send a picture using a show-themed AR lens.

Snap reports that 32% of Short Drama watchers on the platform downloaded a Short Drama app after seeing an ad or clip on Snapchat, which the study says outpaces a 28% competitive average across other social and video platforms.

Spending and Genre Preferences

The study puts Snapchat Short Drama viewers’ average monthly spend on the category above $50, with 69% spending monthly, 1.4x more than non-Snapchatters, and Saudi Snapchatters spending monthly at an 80% rate. Snap ranks the category among the top three digital entertainment forms for monthly consumer spend, trailing only traditional movie streaming at 93%. Year over year, 56% of Snapchatters who watch report spending more, which the study calls 1.3x the rate of non-Snapchatters, against 32% who spend the same and 12% who spend less.

On content, the top factors driving a first click were wanting to see a “secret” revealed (49%), a clip opening on a peak moment (44%), professional-looking visuals and acting (44%), and an episode ending on a shocking or tense note (42%). Billionaire/CEO Romance was the most-watched genre at 45%, followed by Family Conflicts (43%) and Mafia/Dark Romance (42%, 48% in the U.S.). Localization preferences varied by market: 42% of American viewers prefer dubbing, 57% of Saudi viewers prefer original language with subtitles, and 23% of British viewers have no preference.

The study also cites Snapchat client results, reporting that short-drama platform ShortMax saw an 11.6% increase in return on ad spend and 4.7x spend efficiency after adopting Snapchat’s Smart Ads, and that MoboReels recorded a 1.6x return on ad spend after adopting Snapchat’s Smart Budget Optimization tool.
