YouTuber Andrew Rea Directs Debut Fantasy Drama Short Film Starring Liza Koshy, Dean Winters
Andrew Rea, the YouTube creator behind “Binging with Babish,” is making his narrative directing debut with the short film “Old Soul” (working title), a fantasy drama starring Liza Koshy and Dean Winters that recently wrapped production in New York City, per Variety.
Set on a NYC subway, “Old Soul” follows what its official logline describes as “a life-changing encounter between two desperate strangers” and introduces “The Entity,” an immortal, body-shifting consciousness trapped in an infinite cycle and searching for its purpose. While the project is a standalone short, Rea intends to expand it into a trilogy of feature-length thrillers set across the globe. The film will be submitted to festivals ahead of an eventual YouTube release.
Rea launched “Binging with Babish” in 2016, taking its name from a “The West Wing” character, and has since built the channel to more than 10.5 million subscribers. His company, Binge Entertainment, formerly known as Babish Culinary Universe, also produces the interview podcast “In the Booth With Babish” and has expanded into a cookware line, a THC-infused sugar product with cannabis brand Old Pal, a recipe partnership with meal kit service CookUnity, and Bed n Babish, a short-term rental compound on the Delaware River. Rea is repped by WME and Luna Entertainment.
“Old Soul” is produced by Further Adventures, a studio founded by former YouTube executive Steven Beckman and film producer Ben Stillman (“I Care a Lot,” “Somebody I Used to Know”) that focuses on independent filmmaking from digital creators. “We built Further Adventures for storytellers like Andrew who are ready to take bold new steps in their creative journey,” Beckman and Stillman said in a joint statement, adding that Rea “has always brought a distinctly cinematic quality to his work.”
Rea, a Hofstra University film program graduate, called directing “a pure flow state” in a statement, saying “Old Soul” represents “the next chapter of what we want to make and share with the world.”
