Sometimes, you don’t want to see someone’s posts on Instagram. Luckily, there’s a way to click a button and not see a user’s posts, without having to unfollow them. When you mute someone on Instagram, you can quietly stop seeing posts on your feed.

You may see the people using the term “muting” someone about someone when they no longer wish to see another user’s stories or posts. 

How To Mute Someone on Instagram

Here’s how you can mute someone on Instagram.

When you see a story or a post (including Instagram Reels), you can click the three dots on the post. Some options will pop up, including:

You can perform many actions, including unfollowing the account, adding the post to your favorites, reporting the post, or you can click ‘hide.’ After you click hide, you can continue the process of muting the account.

After you’ve hidden the post, you can either report it, mute the account, or unfollow the account. Perhaps you don’t want the user to know you are no longer interested in their content – muting is a great option for that.

When you click mute, you can choose to either mute their posts or mute their posts and stories from appearing in your feed. Remember, you can always still visit the account, but they will no longer be visible when you are scrolling your homefeed. 

You can also go directly to the profile of the account you wish to mute. Click on the following button, and you will see a list of options, including mute, unfollow, block, or report.

Click on mute and you can choose to either mute their posts, stories, or both.

How to Mute On Other Platforms

Similarly, there is the same type of action you can take on other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.

The process is a lot more easier to do on Twitter. When you see a Tweet you don’t like or a user you wish to no longer see, simply click the three buttons on the side of the Tweet. That will lead to the options below.

You can either tell Twitter you’re not interested in seeing this particular tweet, mute the user, block the user, report the tweet, and perform other actions.

When you click mute user, the Tweet automatically disappears and you will no longer see the user’s Tweets in your feed. This does not block the user, as it does not inform the user that you muted them.

Other Ways Of Muting On Instagram

There’s many different reasons why you would choose to mute someone on Instagram. Perhaps a user is spamming with videos and posts.

 Or maybe you have just grown tired of seeing their posts. While you can also mute posts and stories from your feed, you can also mute messages from coming in. This is a way to not get notified from specific accounts when they direct message you.

When you are in your direct messages on Instagram, slide your finger to the left when you see a message from someone you don’t know or don’t wish to interact with. This will give you the option to mute messages or mute calls from this user. Below is an example of what you will see when you are trying to mute messages.

Again, this won’t notify the account that you are muting them, so this can be an efficient way to not have to interact or see messages from an account without having to unfollow or block.

Important Things To Know About Muting on Instagram

It’s important to know how to mute someone on Instagram, as well as understand what it means when someone says they’re muting an account. If someone tells you they had to mute your account, perhaps you would need to look at the content you are posting. Are you posting too much? Is the content you’re posting not suitable for your audience? 

Remember, you can’t tell if someone has muted you, so if your engagement is down but your followers haven’t changed, there’s a good chance people may have muted your account  without wanting to unfollow you. Make sure the content you are posting is consistent and reltable to your followers to avoid people muting your account.
