Twitch Adds Clips to Its DJ Program, but Licensed Music Won’t Come Along

Twitch has extended its native Clips feature to creators in its DJ Program, giving DJs, their editors and their moderators a way to capture and share moments from live sets without including the copyrighted music being played.

The feature, which launched September 1, lets eligible users clip DJ streams during or after a broadcast and post the clips directly to social platforms. According to the company’s blog post, clips can capture the DJ’s voice, crowd reactions, chat activity, behind-the-scenes moments and Q&As, along with “any other non-music audio” from the set. The music itself is not part of the shareable clip.

Twitch is pairing the launch with a limited-time incentive: viewers who download and share an eligible clip by September 15 can unlock a “Clipped That” chat badge.

Clips have been generally available on Twitch for years as a way for viewers and creators to capture and circulate short highlights from a stream. The DJ Program, which Twitch describes as a first-of-its-kind offering for creating live communities around music, operates under licensing terms that govern how the music played during sets can be used and distributed. Extending standard Clips functionality to DJ streams without modification would have let users export and redistribute portions of that licensed music as standalone, shareable files.

By excluding music from the audio a clip captures, Twitch allows DJs to promote their channels and sets through moments such as chat reactions and behind-the-scenes interaction, while keeping the music itself inside the licensed live environment.

Twitch’s announcement does not detail how music is technically excluded or muted within a clip, what length or format restrictions apply, or whether additional rules govern reposting clips to platforms outside Twitch.
