Instagram Rolls Out Tool to Swap Music on Published Posts

Instagram is rolling out a new global feature called “Replace Audio,” which lets users change the music on already-published feed posts and carousels without deleting and re-uploading them. The tool preserves a post’s existing likes, comments, shares, and reach, according to the company.

Previously, creators who wanted to update the soundtrack on a post had no option but to delete it and start over, losing all accumulated engagement in the process. Replace Audio removes that tradeoff, allowing users to align older content with a new song or tie a post to an artist’s new release.

To use the feature, users navigate to the post they want to update, tap the menu in the top-right corner, select “Edit,” and choose a new audio track before confirming the change.

Instagram has framed the update as part of its broader push to give creators more control over content after it goes live, rather than locking those decisions in at the moment of publishing. As reported by Fast Company, the company has made a similar case for other recent releases, including a June update that lets users rearrange their profile grid and an Instagram Plus subscription tier that adds tools like multiple story audiences and a story rewatch insights feature.

Not every recent addition has landed as intended. Earlier this month, Instagram removed an AI tool that let users modify photos from public accounts, saying the feature “missed the mark” after facing backlash.
