Image (And Video) Sizes For Social Media Platforms In 2024

The size of your social media images and videos can be the difference between your posts looking professional vs. awkward. This guide gives you a cheat sheet of the optimal image sizes for all social media platforms to help you put your best foot forward.

When brands and creators post on social media, they often have one primary goal in mind: enhance the experience of the users who interact with their posts. This creates a domino effect leading to better engagement, click-through rates, and conversions.

Since images and videos are the most memorable and tend to stay on people’s minds longer, brands and creators often pull out all the stops and create high-quality visually appealing content.

But the one thing that most of them still get wrong? Using the same image sizes across different platforms which tends to make the posts not-so-appealing after all. That’s why we put together this comprehensive guide to the optimal image (and video) sizes for all social media platforms!

Why is it Important To Get Your Social Media Image Sizes Right?

Each social media platform has its own preferences when it comes to images and videos. Even within the same social network, the sizes for different types of posts vary. And here’s why it’s so important to use the recommended sizes for social media images and videos:

  • Your posts look more professional and polished
  • Your posts don’t end up being pixelated, cropped, or awkwardly stretched to fit the optimal image size
  • Your posts become more visually appealing, driving up your engagement

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of social media image sizes for each platform in detail, here’s a quick cheat sheet of dimensions for the most commonly used post types.

It may seem like Facebook is often overshadowed by newer and shinier platforms, but it still remains one of the most important avenues for marketing. It’s also one of the biggest social media networks with over 3 billion active users

Let’s look at dimensions for Facebook’s posts. If you use the wrong image sizes, Facebook crops your creatives instead of stretching them.

  • Aspect ratio: 1:1
  • Recommended file types: PNG, JPG
  • Notes: Profile pictures are cropped to a circle, so make sure any text is bang in the middle.

Facebook Cover Photo

  • Recommended image size: 851 x 315 pixels
  • Display size: 820 x 312 pixels on desktop, 640 x 360 pixels on smartphones
