Temporary Social Media Editor, NYT Cooking
New York Times Cooking is looking for a temporary social media editor with strong writing skills, sharp strategic instincts, an eye for visuals, and a love of food to join its interdisciplinary, fast-growing team through the end of the year.
In this role, you'll be responsible day to day for the Facebook account, building and publishing a high volume of engaging feed posts and video content. You'll pair food photography and video with sharp, compelling copy that inspires people to cook and drives them to NYT Cooking on platform. This is an in-office position based in New York City, with regular attendance in the office four days each week; there may be some flexibility to work remotely per departmental guidance.
Responsibilities
- Build, schedule, and publish a high volume of daily content on Facebook.
- Write sharp, engaging captions and on-screen text, workshopping headlines and copy with editors.
- Select, crop, and optimize food photography for Facebook feeds; add text, graphics, and layout elements using tools like Figma.
- Publish daily vertical videos on Facebook Reels to drive reach, engagement, and referrals.
- Foster community by engaging with followers in Facebook comments and translating conversations into content ideas.
- Participate in regular Facebook promo meetings, brainstorming ways to visually package and promote recipes, articles, videos, and seasonal tentpoles.
- Work toward traffic and engagement goals, using analytics to inform decisions on content timing and fit.
- Track engagement rates, growth statistics, and reader responses, and communicate them to the editorial team.
- Collaborate with social editors of other NYT Facebook accounts to reach new audiences and drive traffic.
- Report to the Assistant Editor, NYT Cooking.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience as a social editor or manager for a brand or publication, with direct experience running high-follower Facebook accounts.
- Exceptional editorial judgment and copywriting skills.
- Hands-on experience with social scheduling platforms, design platforms like Figma, database platforms like Airtable, and analytics software like Facebook Insights, Dash Social, ManyChat, NewsWhip, and Google Analytics.
This role is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The hourly rate of base pay is $62.61 to $63.19 USD. The New York Times is an equal opportunity employer.
