What is Procreate?

Procreate is an illustration and art application that was developed by the company Savage Interactive, which is based in Tasmania, Australia.

The company had massive success after launching influencer campaigns on Instagram and Tik Tok, where they implemented really good educational marketing which helped to onboard artists from all around the world and get them accustomed to the interface by watching experienced designers and illustrators use various shortcuts to create digital masterpieces.

The app launched long before this campaign and was fully available to the public in 2011. Since that time though, Procreate has boomed in popularity, with the bulk of its success being in the past 5 years.

The vast majority of artists ranging from fine art to tattoo artists will say that this is the “go-to app if you want to be successful”. With a wide variety of free brushes, filters, tools, and other common elements, Procreate feels like a professional creative suite from the get-go.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or a seasoned veteran, you want your illustration software to be intuitive and clean when creating a new piece of art. That’s exactly why procreate is an excellent choice for anyone getting into the digital art world.

Procreate is only available on iPhones and iPads, which does beg the question – which iPad is the best for Procreate?

How to choose an iPad

When starting a new project it’s always essential to have the right equipment. This is no different with tech, and your artwork programs. For instance, you wouldn’t get an iPad with 32 GB from 2020 to run video editing software, because the memory would be too small and it wouldn’t be practical in the long term.

That being said, you need to know what you’re going to use your iPad for before you actually commit to a specific model.

If you’re new to the Procreate app and are just starting your new career as an illustrator, you may not actually need to spend a large sum on a brand-new piece of equipment, or at least the most expensive model. This is also applicable to individuals doing this as a hobby, because Procreate is developed for all iPads and will let you create a masterpiece on almost any device.

On the other hand, many professional artists say that the model definitely makes a difference due to the size of the screen and the “play” area. Larger screens allow artists to feel less compact and certain models handle high-resolution development of images and the option to view them in real-time.

While using Procreate you might realize that many images are of a certain quality, that can be changed, but it will affect your storage and how the RAM handles edits to the artwork. For example, some people have noticed the application crashes and glitches when using a lower-quality model of iPad.

Other people use the animation side of procreate which is a recent feature and it requires a lot more space and Ram which most normal iPads just cannot produce.

That’s why it’s essential to understand your needs as an artist and figure out exactly what you’re going to need the iPad for before making a decision on what to buy.

The Best iPad for Procreate

It goes without saying that the iPad Pro 12.9 6th Gen, will be the best model for Procreate. That being said if you don’t have that budget and you need more information on alternatives, we’re here to help you with exactly that.

Here’s a list of the top 3 recommended iPads for using Procreate.

iPad Pro 12.9 6th Gen

As stated before this is the top-of-the-line model, it’s the best of the best. But it is the most expensive option.

With that in mind, the display is going to be incredibly clear and accurate on colors, the Apple M2 Chip which makes the machine able to have a higher processing rate will let you produce high-quality art with little to no issues, whether using the animation video editor or art editor.

This high performance is also due to the Pro Motion Tech which will adjust the refresh rate automatically to make for a more smooth and streamlined workflow. You’ll notice a big difference in using this vs another iPad when using touch gestures or rotating the canvas.

This device is also completely compatible with the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen, which is one of the best precision tools on the market today.

iPad Air 5th Gen

The second option is the Ipad Air 5th Gen. With an M1 chip processing the Ram, the capabilities of this machine surpass your average iPad and make for a great tool for high-resolution art and minimal animation.

The iPad itself comes in two sizes, 60 GB or 256 GB. It’s always better to opt for the higher GB when dealing with artwork because you’ll probably need it.

This iPad boasts IPS technology on its display so that you’ll always see the color in the true light no matter how and where working. The touch screen is very good at tracking your movements and is precise when it comes to the weight distribution of strokes and lines.

The main thing that makes this iPad so great is the price point, its performance is closer to the Pro but the price tag is competitive when compared to the regular iPad. Making it a great option for people on a budget, giving them both quality and value.

iPad 10th Gen

What’s there to say about this? It’s the base model iPad.

Its functions work with Procreate, and the price point is incredibly low. This is the type of iPad option you could purchase if you wanted to try out Procreate but weren’t yet ready to commit to newer and more expensive models.

It will work for large-scale art, but the quality of the display is very obvious. You may even be able to do some simple animations – but you shouldn’t push this machine too much.

The 10th Gen iPad will only work with the 1st Gen Apple Pencil and it boasts an A13 Bionic chip offering 64 GB and 256 GB storage options.

Pen Accessories

Procreate works with both first and second-gen iPad pencils.

The 1st gen pencil has a charger port on it that can be plugged into a device to reach a full charge. The 2nd Gen Pencil is able to be charged via the new iPad mag-charging port.

The main difference between these two pencil models is device compatibility. Because as stated before, the 1st Gen Pencil is only compatible with the 10th Gen iPad.
